Phone Sex Line Ties Up Dentist Office

Dentist Says He's Losing Money Because Patients Can't Call In

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Phones are ringing off the hook at one St. Johns County dentist office, but it's not patients who are calling.

Rather, it's a recording of a 1-900 phone sex line.

"If you are gay, press 1. If you are a lesbian, press 2," the recording says.

The calls themselves are too filthy and graphic to print.

With no idea where the calls are coming from or who's behind it, Dr. Robert Thousand feels as if he's under attack.

"It tied up all our phone lines," Thousand said. "We'll get 400 to 500 a day just to my office line."

Thousand and his distracted staff said they are fed up.

"It's very frustrating," said Joyce Outlaw, who is annoyed with the constant calls.

The calls are not just an inconvenience, but with all of them tying up the office's phone lines, patients can't get through. And it's costing the dentist plenty of money.

"Tens of thousands (of dollars), there's no doubt," Thousand said. "You can't help the people that need to be helped."

Authorities are baffled and unable to eliminate the perverted prank caller.

AT&T, Thousand's carrier, said, "AT&T has contacted the carriers and has been able to stop many of the unwanted incoming calls to Dr. Thousand's business line. We take this very seriously and are continuing to investigate the matter in order to identify the source of these calls and stop them."

However, the calls keep coming, and Thousand said the frustration is building.

"No enemies come to mind," he said. "Nothing has changed in our lives dramatically that would have provoked this."

It's leaving Thousand to wonder when, if ever, the calls will finally stop.
