Police believe he died before the Ford Explorer hit the telephone pole in the Panama Park neighborhood. His mother was also in the vehicle at the time. She was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Detectives said the woman told them that she and her son were looking for a relative when he was shot.
"They were down in this area looking for a female relative of theirs who they say frequents this area, is homeless," Sgt. Lonnie Mills said. "They were approached by two unknown black males, and during the course of them talking with (those) black males, one of them shot the victim."
Police said Sorkness, of Nassau County, was shot once and tried to drive away.
"He eventually lost consciousness and wrecked the car," Mills said.
No one has been arrested, and police are still investigating.
