17-Year-Old Player Died After Being Hit By Baseball

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Friends and family will pay their respects Friday night and Saturday to a Ribault High School baseball player who died after being hit in the head with a ball at practice.

Greg Green was pitching at baseball practice after school on Oct. 5 when a batter hit the ball, which ricocheted off a fence and struck Green. He was transported to a hospital, where he died last weekend.

The viewing for Green will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Buggs-Bellamy Funeral Home on Jerry Lane on the Northside.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ribault, where Principal James Young told Channel 4 that Green's death affected not just his fellow students, but also staff.

Grief counselors were at the school Monday, where flags were at half mast.

Green was a high-ranking member of the school's Marine Corps JROTC program. The school's cadets wore their uniforms the rest of the week to honor Green.

"He wanted to go to the military and become a lawyer," Green said. "He really wanted to be a JAG officer."

Young said in addition to his extracurricular activities, Green maintained a 4.0 grade point average.

"He loved ROTC. He loved baseball. He loved Ribault High School," Green said. "He had an opportunity to attend other high schools, and he chose to stay at Ribault to receive his diploma."
