GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Former University of Florida quarterback Doug Johnson stands accused of felony battery by Gainesville police following an attack that left a Gators fan hospitalized, a police spokesman told Local 6.
Joe Cappelletti, 28, told police he was a victim of an unprovoked attack right after the UF-LSU game last October. At the time, Cappelletti told Local 6 his nose was broken in eight places and that he required surgery.

When Local 6 first broke the story last October, police didn't have suspects identified, but after continuing to work the case, police identified Johnson as their suspect and in November filed a sworn complaint alleging felony battery with the state attorney's office serving Alachua County.
Johnson, who played for the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL after his time with the Gators, pleaded not guilty, according to Alachua County court records. In addition to police filing the complaint against the former Gators quarterback, Andrew Greer was also named as a co-defendant, a GPD spokesman told Local 6.
The state attorney's office has not decided whether it will move forward with formal charges from its office, as the prosecutor is still reviewing the situation and taking testimony, according to spokesman Spencer Mann. There's no timeline on that decision.
As the legal process plays out, Cappelletti told Local 6 he's hoping for justice.
Local 6 is in the process of obtaining additional documents detailing the incident.
