Man shot inside Mascara's gentleman's club

Homeowners nearby call for club to be shut down

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Homicide detectives say a man in his 20s was shot and killed early Sunday morning inside Mascara's Gentleman's Club near the intersection of Southside and Beach boulevards.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office say it happened at 4:20 a.m. Officers are still working to find out what led up to the shooting or how many times the man was shot, but they do believe the man shot was the intended target.

The medical examiner will determine the victim's identity.

Police say there were dozens of witnesses, so additional detectives were brought to conduct interviews.

This is not the first deadly shooting at the adult club.   A 29-year-old man was killed inside Mascara's during a dispute between eight to 10 people about 4 a.m. on Oct. 6, 2012.

Several shots were fired outside the same adult club in May of this year, but the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said no one was injured in that incident.

Karen Powell, who lives a block away from the strip club says once again she was woken up by the gunfire.

"I hope this is the incident that leads to the club being shut down, we've been begging for it for a long time," said Powell.

Other neighbors are concerned about their children's safety.

"It makes you feel unsafe, I have three children, and I've woken up to gunshots on multiple occasions at 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning, and you get up to make sure you kids still breathing and nothing came into your house. It shouldn't have to be this way," said a neighbor who wishes to remain anonymous.

"You have a neighborhood right across the street, and families are literally moving out because of all the danger that exists," said Powell.

Local residents tell Channel 4 they are hoping to plan a series of community meetings so they can have a say in what's next for The Mascara's Gentleman's Club.

The owner of the club would not comment on the latest shooting.
