LAKE CITY, Fla. – Multiple agencies were called to Columbia Correctional Institution Saturday afternoon after reports that two inmates had been stabbed.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call about two inmates who had been stabbed. On the way, deputies said the call changed to reports that two men were shot.
The Sheriff's Office said the prison was on lockdown and some road were blocked.
"Today two inmates were injured at Columbia Correctional Institution," said a Department of Corrections spokeswoman. "No staff at the institution were injured and all are safe and accounted for. The Department of Corrections is currently working with its law enforcement partners to investigate this matter."
The Sheriff's Office said one inmate was transported to the hospital via helicopter, the other in an ambulance.
Columbia Correction Institution is the same prison where Corrections Officer Ruben Thomas was killed two years ago when inmate Richard Franklin stabbed him 14 times with a makeshift knife. Thomas left behind a wife, a young daughter, and they had another child on the way.
Thomas' name was added to the National Fallen Law Officers' Memorial in Washington D.C. last year.
CCSO said the Department of Corrections is now handling the investigation.
