BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Glynn County police responding to a report of a shooting just after midnight Wednesday found a 33-year-old mother of four dead in a home on Blythe Island Drive.
The body of Casey Nicole Mitchell was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah for an autopsy.
Police determined the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute between Mitchell and her boyfriend, Jermaine Thomas, who had fled the area prior to the officers' arrival.
Thomas was last seen driving a 2001 burgundy Ford Explorer with Georgia license plate number PRY7973. Thomas was arrested Wednesday night in Glynn County. Deputies said they recovered the vehicle.
"We do have witnesses that we have interviewed. They heard shots and saw Jermaine Thomas in that area," said Asst. Chief Scott Trautz, of the Glynn County Police Department. "They saw him leaving that area. That's where we came about with information for his arrest."
Neighbors say the couple had only lived in the home for about a month.
"He could always come back and want to get something," neighbor David Woods said. "But police have been coming by every once in a while."
L.A. Varnadore lives across the street from where Mitchell was killed and said this was the first time he has seen anything like this in the 15 years he's lived in his house.
"I hate it. I didn't know them that well," he said. "They've only been there a short time, and I didn't even know their names. It's surprising, really, because we have a really calm neighborhood out here. I have had no problems with this neighborhood whatsoever."
