BUNNELL, Fla. – A fugitive wanted by the Bunnell Police Department was shot and killed by a U.S. Marshal's Service task force Wednesday morning, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.
The man, identified as 24-year-old Corey Tanner, was shot as an arrest warrant was being served at a home on Espanola Road. No law enforcement officers were injured.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was called to investigate the shooting. It has not released any information on whether Tanner was armed, who fired the shots or how many rounds were fired.
Family members said Tanner had mental issues and was on medication, but he didn't deserve to die.
"They didn't give him a chance," said Tanner's mother, Brenda Williams. "He had problems because he was bi-polar and had other mental problems, but most everybody knew that."
The U.S. Marshal's Service issued a statement saying Tanner was alone when the shooting occurred, but Tanner's aunt told News4Jax that children were inside the home.
"They feel they were doing their job, and we feel they couldn't have done it a better way," Gloria Harris said.
Florida Department of Corrections records show Tanner has a long criminal history, including convictions in 2007 for aggravated battery, resisting arrest with violence and cocaine possession, and in 2010 for manufacturing and possession of a controlled substance.
News4Jax is in Flagler County learning more about Tanner and the incident. This article will be updated as more information becomes available, with live reports on newscasts beginning at 5 p.m.
