JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 68-year-old Jacksonville woman died in a single-vehicle crash in the Dinsmore area of Northwest Jacksonville on Monday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
State troopers said Cheryl Homitz, 68, was driving a pickup truck southbound in the right lane of U.S. 1 near Old Kings Road North about 10:20 a.m.
Troopers said the truck ran off the road to the right, and Homitz (pictured) over-corrected, causing the truck to go back onto the road, cross the grass median and roll several times.
The truck came to a rest overturned on the right shoulder of U.S. 1 northbound.
Troopers said Cheryl Homitz died at the scene. Her 34-year-old son, Jason Homitz, was a passenger and was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.
David Homitz, Cheryl's son, showed up at the scene on U.S. 1 near Old Kinds Road North, not knowing what he'd see.
"I feel devastated," David Homitz said. "It's the worst thing in the world. She was the best woman in the world. She took care of my handicapped brothers. That was her full-time job. That's all she did."
David Homitz said the hospital called him to tell him his brother was there but said his mother was not.
"So I came up this way where the scene was and that's when I saw the medical examiner's truck, and I knew what was going on," David Homitz said. "She came over and I gave her my car so she could get groceries, and I didn't know anything until three hours later when the hospital called me."
All lanes of New Kings Road were closed while troopers investigated.
