ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Besides the typical calls and reports that the St. Augustine Police Department handles on a daily basis, their officer sometime have to deal with the unexpected.
While on duty Tuesday night night, Officer Alina Shirshikova was told that four motherless baby raccoons were found and Animal Control could not respond. Shirshikova drew the assignment because she was known as an animal advocate and would know how to help.

The raccoons' eyes were not open yet, indicating they are less than three weeks. So Shirshikova were placed in a box while she went to a local pet store to get animal milk formula and supplies.
She feed the babies while doing more research on caring for baby raccoon, then went to CVS to purchase Pedialyte to make sure the raccoons stayed hydrated.
After her shift, Shirshikova brought the baby raccoons home and cared for them while she attempted to locate a shelter or rescue where she could bring them.
She ultimately contacted The Wildlife Rescue Coalition of Northeast Florida, which agreed to care for the raccoons.
