Mother speaks after slaying of 16-year-old son

Jacksonville police question several people after Sunday morning homicide

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Westside mother is still devastated and trying to come to grips with the slaying of her 16-year old son Monday morning, after he was shot and killed on Easter.

Police say someone killed Angel Roberto Alonzo at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the Whispering Oaks Apartments on the 4800 block of Atlantic Boulevard but have not yet arrested anyone.

Alonzo's mom, Raquel Gomez, said that he had just started living at the apartments a couple weeks ago.

Holding her son's picture in one hand and his safety patrol trophy in the other, Gomez said she was still in disbelief that he's gone.

"My son always took care of me, was always worried and concerned for me. Why did you take him from me God?" Gomez said through her grief.  "Why did they they take him from me God? They should have killed me instead."

A family friend said Alonzo, who often went by the name Angel Lopez, recently dropped out of school and went on probation and was "hanging with the wrong crowd."

Homicide detectives said they have questioned several people in connection with the shooting. Officers told News4Jax those people are cooperating with the investigation.

Alonzo's next door neighbor at Whispering Oaks said someone shot Alonzo near their second-story steps. He ran outside when he heard the gunfire, and saw Alonzo bleeding in the doorway and called 911.

Police said they have not recovered the gun that was used and have not released much information about the murder but are asking anyone with information about the murder to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
