JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As Lenny Curry prepares to take the oath of office as Jacksonville's next mayor, we're learning more about his closest supporters: his family.

Among the first things you notice in the backyard of the Curry home are the hens. It turns out the city's new mayor has a big appetite for fresh eggs.

"He's a very big supporter because he loves the eggs," said his wife, Molly Curry. "In fact, we were down to just one egg this morning, so he only had one egg for breakfast as opposed to his normal three or four."

Jacksonville's new first lady keeps busy running this San Marco household of three active children, assorted pets and the flock of hens.

Boyd, the oldest child, is 10 and the young man of the house. Brooke, 8, and 6-year old Bridget also help mind the chickens in their yard that looks out on their school, Hendricks Avenue Elementary.

One of Molly Curry's many responsibilities is keeping the kids insulated from the ugly side of politics.

"It was fine at the beginning you know. Everything's nice and great. And then I call the last two weeks very sticky. That's when the debates are. That's when people take their last hits, their attempts to sort of take you out at the knees," she said. 

"We didn't keep the TV on in the house. I didn't want the kids to see that kind of stuff so."

At home, she describes Lenny Curry as "a regular old guy."

"As I like to tell people, his head gets deflated the minute he walks in the door. The kids are on him. The kids, you know, treat him just like good old dad. He still takes out the trash, helps them load the dishwasher. I think it helps keep his head level and keep his priorities in place."

Election night tension, elation

"Lenny had gotten a phone call that gave some of the results. He got a phone call saying what the early results were and he was ahead, which he wasn't expected to be ahead," Molly Curry said. "It wasn't decided then, but the nerves calmed down a little." 

The family headed down to Hyatt Hotel as more votes were tallied. Just before 9 p.m. Lenny Curry received a phone call from Alvin Brown congratulating him on a victory.

Curry stepped to the microphone in ballroom filled with cheering supporters and said, "Soak it in."

"It was sort of a surreal moment," Molly Curry said. "You know, you can envision it in your head, but until it becomes real and you walk out and you see a room full of supporters, you know, it gives you chills."

Standing on the podium as his father is acknowledged as Jacksonville's mayor-elect, Boyd was chewing bubble gum and blowing bubbles.

"We've been working on his presence at the swearing in, at the inauguration," she said. "No baseball cap; no bubble gum."

But giggles and laughter are key ingredients for this first family. Just a few days ago, Lenny Curry Instagrammed a photo with the caption: "My crew. It's a fun crew. Life is good."
