DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A man wanted on allegations of shooting and killing two women and critically wounding a man in Daytona Beach Thursday was arrested Friday in Miami.
York Zed Bodden was arrested by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in the triple-shooting, which happened just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday on Carolina Lake Drive.
"I hope he enjoyed his ride down to Miami because this man belongs in a cage," Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said. "That's what he is: a violent predator who, for over $200 in rent money, snuffed out the lives of two college students."
Police said Timesha Floyd Carswell, 21, and Diona McDonald, 19, both of whom attended Bethune-Cookman University, died in the shooting. Micah Parham, 21, also a B-CU student, was taken to Halifax Hospital in critical condition.
Chitwood told WKMG-TV that Bodden's phone was shut off Thursday night near Delray Beach, and authorities believed that Bodden was headed to his hometown, Miami, where he was spotted around noon Friday.
"(Bodden) has a nasty (criminal) record down in Miami, including kidnapping," Chitwood said.
According to police, five people, including Bodden, were inside an apartment when an argument began over rent money. One of the men saw Bodden with a gun and jumped out a window, police said.
"During the fight, our witness struggles with this guy for control of the weapon. When our witness loses the fight for the handgun and sees he's about to get shot, he dives out of the window and starts screaming for help," Chitwood said.
Bodden then shot each woman in the head and shot the other man several times, police said.
"Clearly, he's armed and dangerous. He's killed two people," Chitwood said. "He attempted to kill the third one who, at this point, has survived."
After the shooting, police brought in representatives from nearby Bethune-Cookman University. Students said the campus was put on lockdown around the time of the shooting.
"It's very disturbing. You send your child off to go to school and you get this? Just crazy," parent Jasmine Aamson said.
"It's sickening to walk into that crime scene and see two people who have yet to begin their lives lying there dead, knowing there's nothing you can do to bring them back, over a fight over rent money," Chitwood said.
