CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. – A Confederate logo will soon be coming back to a specialty license plate in Georgia after a push from a local veteran group.
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal temporarily halted the creation of specialty license tags with the Confederate flag on it after the Charleston massacre a few months ago. But now the state is allowing a modified specialty tag to return.
Many Georgia residents support the controversial license plate design.
"It's Southern pride you know, gotta' bring it back. They took it down in South Carolina, you gonna' bring it back up," said Cameron Lott.
"It's not racist. It's just a bunch of dumb people that wanted to get together and make up their own minds about what it meant. It's not true. There ain't nothing wrong with flying it. It's heritage, not hate," J.C. Call said.
But now News4Jax has learned the State Department of Revenue has reached an agreement with a group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans to bring back a specialty plate that will be similar to this design with a Confederate logo.
Diallo Tyson lives in Camden County and doesn't feel the confederate license plate a good idea.
"I don't' think a … especially state-sponsored, like a state-sponsored license plate or tag or anything associated with state government should be allowed, if that's the right term. So not really all that thrilled," said Tyson.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that the tag will come out next week and look similar to the one pictured below, but it will phase out the faded background image of the flag and keep the smaller square rebel flag logo.

The Georgia Department of Revenue sent News4Jax this statement:
"The Department of Revenue recently concluded positive conversations with the Sons of Confederate Veterans. These conversations consisted of completing the statutorily mandated process for their specialty license plate. The design is currently being finalized."
News4Jax spoke to a few Georgia residents who are split on the issue.
"I don't look at everything as being negative, so therefore it doesn't really bother me. It's not offensive to me," said Melvin Houston.
"I wish people would not put it on their license plates. I think it's a very divisive symbol, a hateful symbol. And there's only one reason to have it, to display bigotry," said Beth Humphrey.
News4Jax also reached out to the group Sons of Confederate Veterans for comment, but have not heard back yet.
