JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The latest scam calling homes trying to get people's personal information are using the phone number of Landmark Middle School on their caller ID. The Better Business Bureau is telling people to be on alert.
A spokeswoman with the BBB told News4Jax it has gotten about a dozen complaints over the past week about a scammer asking people if they want to take a free energy survey over the phone.. While the caller doesn't provide a number to call back, she said the staff at the school has received hundreds of calls.
One man who did not want to be identified said the caller said she was representing a firm that does free energy surveys for the Jacksonville area. His caller ID showed "Duval County." He believes the caller was getting ready to ask him for personal information the caller said something didn't sound right.
Only later he discovered the number being used was the same number as Landmark Middle School.
As the BBB investigates who is behind the call, the potential victim said he wants to make sure people don't fall victim.
"I wanted to let people know that there's a problem out there," He said. "People are trying to get into our homes or whatever they're trying to get into. But it's our safety zone."
The BBB spokesperson tells us they have no idea who is behind the scam. The BBB has put out a warning on its Facebook and Twitter pages and the bureau is reminding you to never give out your personal information over the phone, even if the caller seems legitimate.
