Deputies found a gunman getting in and out of his vehicle while in possession of two handguns, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies made contact with the gunman. Deputies said he raised one of the handguns to his head, at which time deputies began negotiations with him, giving him multiple commands to put down his weapons.

The gunman then pointed the other handgun towards deputies and began firing at them, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies returned fire. During the exchange, Sgt. Daniel Trammell received a suspected gunshot wound to the leg, deputies said.

The gunman also had suspected gunshot wounds. Deputies said Trammell and the gunman were taken to a hospital. Trammell was listed in stable condition and the gunman was listed in critical condition Wednesday night.

The investigation was turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, deputies said.

"Our hearts all stopped when we heard that one of our own had been shot while on duty tonight. It's never a phone call I ever want to receive," Sheriff Chris Blair said. "Sgt. Trammell is an outstanding member of our agency and we ask our community to send him their prayers and healing thoughts as he recovers. We will continue to work with the FDLE to ensure that a thorough, independent investigation is completed in regards to this incident."

People were advised to avoid the intersection of Baseline Road and Northeast 20th Street. Deputies said northbound and southbound lanes were closed Wednesday night.
