A viral video capturing a Jimmy John's delivery man hopping on a moving train in San Marco to get to the other side has raised concerns for some Florida Department of Transportation officials.
A News4Jax viewer caught the off-duty sandwich delivery man hoisting his bike over his shoulder and hopping on and then off of a moving train.
As of Wednesday, nearly a quarter of a million people had seen the video, which was captured by a viewer, on the WJXT4 The Local Station Facebook page. Another 95,000 people have read the story on News4Jax.com.
When News4Jax showed the video to some people at FDOT who had not seen it yet, they were quite surprised. They said they had never seen "that" before - and they've seen a lot of crazy and dangerous stunts over the years.
What bothers them most is that it's pretty clear this wasn't the man's first time trying that.
"He looks like he's done that before," said David Fierro with FDOT. "It's crazy. I mean, he's flirting with death."
One of their biggest concerns is how easy the train-hopper makes this stunt look.
"He was nonchalant, he knew exactly what he was going to do. He wasn't in a hurry, he wasn't panicked. But that doesn't mean it wasn't dangerous," Fierro said.
According to FDOT, Florida ranks third in the nation in the number of train casualties. FDOT said 35 deaths and 18 serious injuries were reported last year.
FDOT warns that from a distance, the train may look to be going very slowly, but the closer you get, the faster it goes.
"People don't understand how dangerous trains really are. I mean, you have so much force moving that. What he did is crazy," said Mario Dipola, FDOT safety program engineer. "We all see the exciting thing, but then the reality sinks in and you go 'yeah, but a lot of people are dying on these tracks.'"
Darrell Thompson, a retired CSX signalman, echoed that feeling while patiently waiting for a train to pass in front of him.
"Cuz we've seen people lose legs and arms and lose their lives because of that very action."
