GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 6-year-old child and a 4-month-old baby were killed and seven people were injured in a three-vehicle crash in Gainesville Sunday, authorities said.
The Gainesville Police Department has identified the 6-year-old victim as Steven Morton, of Gainesville, and the 4-month-old baby as Faith Swilley, of Micanopy.
A 2003 Kia Sorrento was traveling north on State Road 26 when it veered across the center line into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2006 Toyota Corolla, according to GPD. The Kia then struck a 2007 Toyota Scion.
Five children and four adults were taken to a local hospital after the accident. Steven died at the hospital later that day, and Faith died at the hospital Thursday, GPD said.
Steven was a passenger in the Corolla. The 75-year-old driver of the Corolla, an 8-year-old passenger and another 6-year-old child all suffered non-life-threatening injuries, GPD said.
Taylor Swilley, 20, of Gainesville -- who was driving the Kia -- suffered minor injuries, according to police. Faith, Swilley's daughter, was in critical condition after the crash and died days later. Swilley's 21-year-old wife and another 2-year-old child suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The 33-year-old driver of the Scion also suffered minor injuries, police said.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the Kia to cross the center line into oncoming traffic.
