Homemade bomb forces evacuation of Matthew Gilbert Middle School

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Matthew Gilbert Middle School in the city's Eastside was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a student make a homemade chemical bomb in a waste basket, school officials said.

Students and faculty were allowed to re-enter the building within an hour.

A spokeswoman for Duval County Public Schools sent this statement;

Matthew Gilbert campus was evacuated as a precautionary measure due to a student placing a mixture of ammonia and bleach in a classroom trash can. A Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Hazmat team investigated, and upon finding it safe, authorized students and staff to return to normal school activities. The student will be disciplined according to the Student Code of Conduct. Duval County Public Schools values the safety of its students and is pleased with the cooperation of students, faculty and staff."
