Hole on I-95 slows southbound traffic

Lanes expected to reopen midday Sunday

Jacksonville, Fla. – A large hole is under repair in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, about a quarter-mile north of 8th Street.

The hole, estimated at about 4 feet by 8 feet, opened up Saturday and caused traffic backups in the area. Initially, only one lane was open to traffic, but a second lane was reopened overnight. The exit ramp to 20th Street remains closed.

The Florida Department of Transportation urged drivers to detour on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway or Golfair Boulevard.

FDOT crews had the hole patched around 6 a.m. Sunday. They told News4Jax it normally takes 2-4 hours for the concrete to dry, but due to the size of the hole, they want to give it more time to set before allowing traffic on it.

News4Jax learned that a contractor noticed the hole Saturday morning and contacted FDOT and got the repair process started.
