Police ID man shot, killed at Brentwood gas station

James Young, 40, was shot multiple times, police said

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police have identified the man who was shot and killed Friday evening at a gas station in the city's Brentwood neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said. 

Officers went to the RaceWay gas station on Golfair Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. and found 40-year-old James Young dead.

Young was shot multiple times, Sgt. Jay Farhat said. 

Investigators said they believe Young was targeted at the gas station. 

According to court records, Young had been arrested multiple times in the past. 

  • 1999 trafficking cocaine
  • 2000 battery on law enforcement officer
  • 2004 introduction of contraband into a detention facility
  • 2007 trafficking in cocaine 
  • 2008 fugitive in other jurisdiction

A silver newer-model Kia Forte was seen driving away from the scene, Farhat said.

Farhat said they will be obtaining surveillance video from the gas station, which will hopefully provide detectives with more information. 

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
