What do you see as the top three issues in this race?

  • Insuring economic security for all Americans: people who work for a living should make a living wage and have health care, opportunities for quality education, and a secure Social Security system. Making sure that these foundations of economic prosperity are in place for working American families drives me to run for office.
  • Growing good jobs: While unemployment may have fallen recently, a lot of people are working part time jobs or working in jobs that don't match their skills and talents. In Florida, there are a number of needs that could be filled by these folks. We need to grow our solar energy capacity (which is surprisingly underdeveloped given that we are the "Sunshine State") and repair many of our roads and other infrastructure, Infrastructure investments not only create jobs themselves, but can help to bring new industries as they, more and more, see Florida as a center for technological development.
  • Restore and protect our environment: Instead of weakening the laws and programs which protect the environment and our public lands, we need to strengthen them. We need to build the programs and infrastructure needed to help stop the nutrient pollution that is destroying our springs, rivers, lagoons, and Everglades. Our beautiful environment is the spring from which our economy, especially tourism, flows, and we need to protect it.

  • How can you help voters in a way that others running for this office cannot?

As a professional arbitrator, I am both purposeful and civil—I won't back down from a fight to get things done or to follow my principles, but I won't fight simply to be obstructionist. I also don't take large campaign contributions from big donors that I know are intended to influence my votes. I will work for and vote on behalf of the people of my district.

What would you hope to be remembered for accomplishing after serving in this office?

I will make some solid accomplishments in the three areas above. I'd also like to be remembered for being engaged with my constituents—and truly listening and helping them as much as I can. I'd also like to be part of a movement in Congress that works across party lines to get things done—it's time for members of Congress to stop being blindly partisan, to stop treating governing as a game to be won rather than the public service it should be, and to listen to the people.
