JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One year after a 23-year-old man was killed at his Northside Jacksonville home, his mother opened up for the first time about the man she called “Bean.”
Kenneth Felton was shot Oct. 20, 2015, right outside of his Linda Drive apartment, and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office still doesn't have any leads to make an arrest in the case.
Felton's mother, Keasha Jennings, said she is remaining strong through all of this and that all she can do is take it one day at a time until an arrest is made in her son’s murder.
“A piece of me literally died on that day, with Bean,” Jennings said. “Every day I get up with the expectation that it's going to be better than the day before. Sometimes that's not my reality, but I'm still here, and I have a purpose.”
Jennings said her life changed forever a year ago when one of her four sons was taken from her.
She said it still shocks her that someone would take his life.
“It's very hurtful, because no one deserves to die the way he died,” Jennings said.
Police said Felton’s death is being investigated as a murder.
Witnesses told police that Felton was walking outside of his Linda Drive apartment on Oct. 20 last year when they heard several gunshots and saw a bunch of guys running from the area.
Soon after, Jennings said she got the call that no mother wants.
“I got to the hospital probably in about 15 minutes and by 6:10, the doctor was coming out telling me that my son did not make it,” Jennings recalled.
A year later, Jennings said all she has are memories. She said her son was a loving father, brother and friend to many people and that she'll continue to fight until the person who took his life is brought to justice.
“I am his voice. If no one else speaks up for him, I am his voice,” Jennings said. “I dare someone, anyone, to take on the challenge to speak up.”
Police said they are still looking for any information that could lead to an arrest.
