A Gainesville police officer tried to stop Stacy after he ran a stop sign Nov. 8, but the driver fled the scene, according to a report from the Gainesville Police Department. The officer did not pursue the driver, but the vehicle was later found crashed into a fence at Lincoln Middle School.
Inside the abandoned vehicle was 28 grams of marijuana, two scales, a cell phone and a debit card, according to the report. From those items, officers were able to identify the driver as Steve Stacy.
While officers were investigating that crash, the Gainesville Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle from Legree. She told officers that someone jumped in her car and drove away.
Officers found text messages sent between Stacy and Legree, including one that said “tell them someone took the car.”
Officers found Stacy at his home, where he was arrested. Officers also found 1.2 grams of MDMA in Stacy’s sock.
