PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A Dunkin' Donuts receipt discovered inside a recovered stolen vehicle could possibly lead to the culprit, the victim of the car theft said Thursday.
A string of car burglaries occurred earlier this month in Dolphin Cove, a Ponte Vedra Beach subdivision located off State Road A1A.
One Dolphin Cove resident, David Lee, told News4Jax that his Toyota Camry was stolen from his front yard Nov. 19. The next day, police found the car, which had been totaled, in the Arlington area of Jacksonville.
Inside the recovered car was a receipt from Dunkin' Donuts, along with other people's personal items, Lee said.
"We found medical cards and some other ID cards from other people that they'd hit that night using our car as a vehicle to travel around in," Lee said.
He said whoever stole his car may have stopped and had breakfast. But despite the possible evidence left inside his car, Lee said, he feels as if nothing has been done to catch the criminals.
"They told my wife they're in the process of going to Dunkin' Donuts and looking at the surveillance videos. But, to my knowledge, I've gotten no indication that they've found anything," Lee said.
News4Jax went to the Dunkin' Donuts on Beach Boulevard Thursday, but employees said they could not release the surveillance video. Employees added that the surveillance footage had already been given to police.
In the meantime, Lee said, he's just waiting for an update.
"This area's been hit on a regular basis here lately. Part of the reason, the police officer I talked to said that they haven't gotten any results yet because it takes time to process the fingerprints and they're just overwhelmed," Lee said.
According to Lee, detectives continue to investigate.
