Police were alerted just before 2 a.m. about a shooting on East 9th Street and Market Street. Upon arrival, they found a man laying on the sidewalk and transported him to the hospital, where he died.

There were no witnesses, and it is unclear if someone heard the gunshots and called police or if someone found the man's body and reported it, the Sheriff's Office said.

Police were combing the area for evidence.

One neighbor said that she has seen too much crime in the neighborhood.

"Every time I leave my house, once a month or so, I see tape somewhere," said Shelia Gunn. "I work, I have two kids, and I won't even allow my kids to walk the streets up here."

In the past six months, there have been 38 assaults and two homicides within a half mile radius of where the man was found. Additionally, there have been 38 assaults, 27 vehicle break-ins/thefts, 24 burglaries and nine robberies.
