JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – More construction is in the works on a major roadway in Jacksonville. The project will include widening the Fuller Warren Bridge and improving the I-95 - I-10 interchange to ease congestion and traffic.
An additional travel lane will be added in both directions, expanding the bridge.
The Florida Department of Transportation said the changes are necessary to keep up with demand. About 250,000 cars currently travel through the interchange every day, and that number is expected to increase to 290,000 by 2040.
The project will come with some new accommodations. Instead of driving, people can walk or even bike across the Fuller Warren Bridge.
A new shared use path will be added to both northbound and southbound sides of the bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists. It will be separated from traffic by a barrier and fence. It connects San Marco and Riverside and FDOT says it will give locals easier access to events like the Riverside Arts Market.
The projects are expected to be finished in 2020. FDOT is hosting an open house June 1 at its Jacksonville Urban Office.
The $126 million project also includes a dedicated ramp from I-10 to Stockton Street to reduce weaving and confusion from traffic coming from I-95 and sound barriers along parts of U.S. 17 and I-10.
