CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – County Road 220 will be shut down in both directions from College Drive to Sleepy Hollow Road until June 18 after construction at the railroad crossing began Thursday morning.
Traffic in both directions will be rerouted while CSX does construction.
When traveling east on County Road 220, drivers are advised to take College Drive to Blanding Boulevard and turn onto Kingsley Avenue to take U.S. 17 south to get to any destination east of the railroad crossing on C.R. 220.
Westbound traffic should take U.S. 17 north, turn onto Kingsley Avenue and then south onto Blanding Boulevard to College Drive to reach any destination west of the railroad crossing.
The road is critical to people who live everywhere from Middleburg to Fleming Island. Drivers in the area such Jim Wharton said that despite a lot of signs, he was unaware of the closures.
“I wish they’d let us know sooner,” Wharton said. “I came through yesterday and people were mad -- speeding around and going back.”
Frustrations by the construction went beyond drivers. A temporary detour for pedestrians forced residents like Don Weir forced to walk nearly four miles to pick up his prescriptions.
“I think they should have shut one lane down at a time, instead of shutting both lanes down," Weir said.
