Crash happened near Heckscher Drive

A man is in critical condition Sunday after he was ejected from his car in a crash on Interstate 295

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man in critical condition Sunday after he was thrown from his car in a crash on Interstate 295 near Heckscher Drive, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Beau Gerald McCook, 26, was driving north in the left lane of Interstate 295 at about 1:30 a.m., when he was rear-ended by Michael Cole Reed, 23, troopers said.

According to the crash report, McCook was trying to slow down because of traffic in front of him and Reed failed to slow down. The crash sent McCook slamming into a concrete wall, ejecting him front the driver’s side window onto southbound lanes.

McCook was taken to UF Health Jacksonville in critical condition.

Neither Reed nor his passenger was injured in the crash, troopers said. 

Reed is charged with careless driving, troopers said.
