Man accused of removing ankle monitor for jiu-jitsu

Guillermo Jose Ocasio Almodovar arrested

No description found

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A man who’s required to wear an ankle monitor as a condition of his pre-trial release was caught without the device Tuesday night, but he justified the situation by telling an official that he couldn’t wear the monitor: He had jiu-jitsu in the morning, he said.

A deputy with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office was sent to the home of Guillermo Jose Ocasio Almodovar after learning officials had reason to believe that Almodovar's GPS ankle monitor had been tampered with, according to the arrest report.

When the deputy arrived at the house, he said, Almodovar was wearing only a towel, and the deputy could see clearly that he wasn’t wearing the monitor, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Almodovar told the deputy the GPS device was in the freezer. The deputy noted in the arrest report that the monitor’s strap was cut, and the device was indeed inside a plastic bag filled with water, located in the freezer.

The defendant said he couldn’t wear the device to his jiu-jitsu class, and that the monitor first fell off in the  shower.

Almodovar is now in jail for violating the terms of his pretrial release and accused of criminal mischief.

His arrest earlier this month involved a domestic violence allegation.
