Police ID man killed in King Street double shooting

Investigators say shooting stemmed from dispute involving several men

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man killed in a double shooting  that stemmed from a dispute Friday afternoon in the Mixon Town area has been identified, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Marvin Chevelle Hartley, 27, died at a hospital from his wounds and another man was badly injured in the shooting, police said.

Officers were called about 4:30 p.m. to the shooting on King Street at Fleming Street -- just north of Interstate 10.

JSO Sgt. David Smith said police found Hartley unresponsive on King Street, and he later died at a hospital.

A couple of blocks over, police said, they found a second gunshot victim, who was described as a 32-year-old man. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a dispute involving several men who were in the street. Smith said a Black Buick sedan was seen taking off north on King Street after the shooting.

Officers spent several hours going door to door, asking if anyone had seen what happened or had any surveillance video of the incident.

According to News4Jax records, this is the 82nd homicide this year in Jacksonville.

Just a few blocks away from Friday's double shooting, a 30-year-old man was shot and killed in May. Police said Bernard Smithson's body was found behind an abandoned home on King Street. No arrests have been made in that case.

There have been 67 crimes reported with a half-mile of Friday's homicide since the beginning of June.

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
