JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – New charges were announced Wednesday in the tragic death of 3-year-old Connor Mickens, who was killed in an exchange of gunfire on Oct. 19.

Connor later died at a hospital.

Littles, the ex-boyfriend of Connor's mother, had previously turned himself in to police on another charge. Connor's family said they learned of the added murder charge when they saw a breaking news alert about it as they were remembering the little boy's life.

On Wednesday, News4Jax learned of new charges and new information about the case. According to court records, Littles is charged with murdering Connor, but the bullet that killed him was not from Littles’ gun.

According to police, Littles went to the doorway leading into a bedroom and began firing in the direction of the bed. A man, Connor and Connor's mother were inside the bedroom at the time.
That's when the man in the bedroom armed himself with a pistol, began returning fire at Littles and, during the exchange, Connor was shot in the head and Connor’s mother was shot in the leg, according to the Sheriff's Office.

According to court records, it was a bullet from the new boyfriend’s return fire that struck Connor, killing him.

Because Littles is considered the aggressor, he’s charged with felony second-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, burglary and unlawful possession of firearms. He is being held without bond.

The man who Littles exchanged gunfire with is not facing charges.
