Dive team searches Macclenny property where man was killed

FDLE investigates shooting involving retired Baker County deputy's relative

MACCLENNY, Fla. – The dive team from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is in Baker County on Tuesday, searching a pond on the property where deputies say a 31-year-old man was shot and killed last month. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation of the death of Dominic “DJ” Broadus II.

Deputies found Broadus lying dead on the ground near the rear of the home located on a large, rural property on Southern States Nursery Road, according to an incident report.

According to the incident report, Fraser, 29, who lives on the property property, was taken in for questioning, but never charged.

The heavily redacted report does not specify what led up to the shooting and Broadus' father continues to want answers to why his son was shot and killed. Dominic Broadus Sr. told News4Jax his son was shot three times – two bullets in the back of his head, one in the front.

"I’m not sure what they’re looking for," Broadus Sr. said of Tuesday's search. "I know my son’s phone was missing. I’m not sure where the phone is. That could be one issue."

Broadus' parents told News4Jax that even their most basic questions about the case have gone unanswered, and they are worried there could be a cover-up of exactly what happened and why.

"He was my only son and I loved him," Broadus said.

Joel Addington, managing editor of the Baker County Press, said the community doesn't have many homicides and people are following the case closely.

"I would say it definitely has gotten the rumor mill working overtime," Addington said. (Broadus is) "from Jacksonville. He is not a local guy, so that is one of the big questions: What is his relationship to the shooter? And why was he here? What brought him here?"

Broadus Sr. said he didn't know if his son knew Fraser or why he went to the property that day.

Fraser's father said he did not have any comment and ordered News4Jax off the property.

FDLE said it cannot publicly comment on an ongoing investigation, but did confirm that Tuesday's activity was the result of a search warrant.
