Police identify father of 2 shot, killed outside Westside home

Police say 'potential suspect' seen arguing with victim, ran off after shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was shot and killed Tuesday night during an altercation with another man outside a Westside home, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Officers responded to the shooting on Alvin Road South, near Old Middleburg and Sandler roads.

Police said the man, later identified as 44-year-old Chadwick Hoilman, died at the scene. News4Jax was told Hoilman was the father of two children. He lived 20 miles away on Jacksonville's Southside.

Witnesses told investigators that they saw the victim and a man wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans arguing before the shooting. Police said the man ran off after the gunfire.

Detectives said a handgun was recovered, but it's unclear how many shots were fired.

Police said the man, who's about 5 feet 9 inches tall with short black hair, ran into a wooded area after. Detectives described him as a "potential suspect" and said he lived in the area, but they were still working to identify him.

"It's just so scary because, even if you scream in there by yourself, nobody can hear you," said neighbor Cherry Mabalot.

Mabalot and her family were asleep when her friend called her to tell her what had happened.

"She was, like, 'Oh, my gosh. There's a lot of police, the K-9 dogs and everything," Mabalot said.

On Wednesday, she told News4Jax that she finds it unnerving that an arrest has not yet been made.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate.
