Man killed in possible shootout in NW Jacksonville neighborhood

Police say witnesses spotted 4-door, dark-colored vehicle leaving area

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police are investigating a possible shootout late Saturday night between two groups of people in Northwest Jacksonville that left one man dead, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Just before midnight, officers responding to several reports of gunfire on Fredericksburg Avenue found several cars and houses struck by bullets. No residents in the homes reported injuries.

Officers at the scene learned a young man brought to a hospital about 25 minutes after the shooting died of gunshot wounds.

A woman in the neighborhood identified the victim as her grandson, 21-year-old Darious Anderson. She said Anderson was shot three times.

Police said the car the three people used to bring the man to the hospital had several bullet holes. Those people were detained for questioning.

Witnesses told police they saw a dark-colored, four-door vehicle leaving the area.

Neighbors too frightened to give their names told News4Jax that the shooting didn't come as a surprise.

"Too many young people partying all day. ... It brings crime into the neighborhood," one neighbor said. "We're just getting tired of it."

One man says he’s watched his neighborhood change drastically over the past several months.

"It was pretty quiet until about six months ago. Then it got kind of chaotic. Kind of like a clubhouse, more than anything else," he said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
