Former Glynn County police chief dies

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering

Matt Doering, who retired as Glynn County's police chief one year ago, died Tuesday at his home. He was 56 years old.

It was reported that he had suffered from an extended illness.

After more than 30 years with the department, he served as chief for the last 14 years. After retirement, Doering became a Glynn County Schools police officer at Risley Middle School.

"Please keep Chief Doering and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time," the Police Department posted on its Facebook page.

Doering is survived by his wife, Michele, and his children, Ian and Miriam.

Family will receive visitors on Friday from  5 to 7 p.m. at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4407 U.S. Highway 17 North, Brunswick, GA 31525.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church, 935 Chapel Crossing Road, Brunswick, GA 31525.

Interment will take place afterward during a private graveside service in Hazlehurst, Georgia.

The Police Department said Doering will receive full law enforcement honors.
