Man shot in Clay County, suspect in custody, deputies say

Stray bullet went into nearby home, neighbor says

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. – A suspected shooter is in custody after a man was shot multiple times Wednesday afternoon in Middleburg, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said the shooting, which stemmed from a domestic dispute, happened at a home near the intersection of Archer Street and Bailey Way.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has identified the shooter as David Nathaniel Jimenez, 20. According to his arrest report, Jimenez lived at the home where the shooting happened.

Jimenez had his first appearance Thursday morning on an attempted murder charge and his bond was set at $260,000. He will be in court again March 6.

The report said the victim was shot eight times and was rushed to a hospital in serious condition. His condition was last listed as stable. According to the report, one of the bullets missed his heart by only a few inches. On Monday, News4Jax obtained audio of the 911 call made by the victim.

Operator: "911. What’s the address of your emergency?"
Caller: "Somebody just drove by and started unloading on the house."
Operator: "You’re at Archer Street?"
Caller: "Yes, ma’am."
Operator: "Are you hurt?"
Caller: "Yes. I was shot in my arm. I don’t know how many times ... trying to stay awake."
Operator: "OK. Let me get an ambulance on the line with us. Hold on."

Darwin Griffin, who lives nearby, said his teenage daughter was at their home when a stray bullet went through their house.

“I found out it went into my shower, through my bathroom and through another wall," Griffin said. "I’m just lucky that my daughter is fine.”

Darwin also said there were times when he could hear people arguing next door but said he didn’t think it was appropriate to get involved.

A neighbor who lives across the street said she was at home when the shooting happened. She was upset to learn what happened, saying she recently moved to the community and is still in the process of unpacking her belongings.
