Police: Man inside Jaguar killed in drive-by shooting

Man in his 50s arriving at home when he was shot, Jacksonville police say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was killed in a drive-by shooting early Friday afternoon in Robinson's Addition, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Police responded about 12:15 p.m. to a shooting on Kingston Street near Penton Street, just north of West Beaver Street.

A man in his 50s was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

Investigators believe there was a drive-by shooting as the victim was arriving home. Police said the victim was in a purple Jaguar.

It's unclear how many shots were fired, but it appeared that both the driver's side and back seat windows of the car had been shot out. The car was towed away several hours later.

Investigators could not say whether they have any suspect descriptions.

Milton Pratt, who has lived in the area for four years, told News4Jax that the violence is getting worse in the neighborhood.

"When I first got here, I never thought it was like this. I'm from Brooklyn, New York, so I thought Florida was a lot better than Brooklyn. But since I've got here, I've seen a lot of the young guys doing a lot of the killings," Pratt said. "It's getting a lot worse, so I basically don't go out. I only go from the house to the job, to the store, go home, get my remote and that's pretty much it."

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate three drive-by shootings that happened last weekend in the city. Four people were shot, and two of them died. News4Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson spoke about the trend.

"When it comes to this type of violent crime, that’s a cowardly way to settle a difference -- to do a drive-by, just to go by and spray the house and hit whoever gets in the way or whoever is innocent and standing by. Those are acts of cowards," Jefferson said. "They’re a bunch of cowards, a bunch of losers wreaking havoc on our city."
