JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Thursday will be the first day of school at Trinity Christian Academy. 

It was supposed to open Monday, the same day Jacksonville's public schools began the new year. But lightning from severe storms Sunday night knocked out power to the school on Hammond Boulevard. Parents were notified by text and social media early Monday morning that the school would not open Monday.

Monday afternoon, the school announced that the extent of the damage will force the school to remain closed two additional days to give ample time for repairs, a complete system check and inspections.

"We are thankful for the expert crews from Miller Electric, CES Testing and Trinity maintenance, with assistance from JEA working to resolve the issues caused by the late-night lightning strikes," Trinity's communications manager, Christopher Carr, said in an email. "Thank you for your understanding. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday!"

A security guard told News4Jax a big boom was heard around 7:30 p.m. Sunday when lightning struck the building. While electricians worked to restore power, nearly a dozen church members were up early to help save any food left in the freezers.

Makeup days for the three-day closure are scheduled for Nov. 11, Nov. 27 and Jan. 6.
