JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One man is dead and at least four others are in the hospital Thursday following a reported street fight that spread across the Brentwood neighborhood in Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Mike Silcox said JSO learned of possible shots fired around 1:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of North Pearl Street through Shot Spotter.
When officers arrived, they found a young man dead inside a home on Pearl Street, Silcox said.
The man was identified as Steven Burt, 24, by his cousin.
"They say he was shot four times in the back," said Morris Tisby, Burt's cousin. "I just want my cousin back. That's it."
Nearby, on West 23rd Street, a man was also found with stab wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition, Silcox said.
JSO believes at least three other people at a nearby hospital that were receiving treatment for injuries, including a gunshot wound, might be connected to the incident.
A witness told JSO it all started with a street fight.
JSO is now looking for a car -- a maroon Dodge Charger or Dodge Challenger -- that may be connected to the incident. As of 3:30 p.m., there was no suspect description.
The Sheriff's Office was working to secure a search warrant for the home to gather more evidence.
Burt's cousin said the family is also trying to figure out what happened. He described Burt as a humble young man who loved his family.
"He doesn't bother nobody. He's got two little girls. He's got a family," Tisby said. "We've been together since Pampers. That's my boy."
Kevin Weston lives in the area and heard about what happened.
"Kind of outraged to a certain degree and angry because there's just too much crime unnecessary crime going on just bothered, just tired and bothered more than anything," Weston said. "Build another community center or something, just give kids something to do other than just hang out all day. I think they can make a lot of changes but it starts in the home, proper parenting prevents a lot of this here, teach your kids the right way to grow up."
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office's crime mapping tool, 33 crimes were reported within a half mile radius of the scene in the past month. Those crimes include burglary, assault and theft.
