1 shot at Jacksonville Beach skate park

Video appears to show fight breaking out before shooting

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – One person was shot Friday morning at a skate park in Jacksonville Beach, police said.

Officers responded about 11:15 a.m. to the shooting at the skate park at South Beach Park.

Police said they learned one person had been shot in the arm, and they located the person at a nearby medical facility a short time later. The person's injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

By late Friday afternoon, several skaters were back at the park, and police said they were still looking for the gunman.

News4Jax obtained a video that appears to show a fight breaking out before the shooting. In the video, a man is being dragged and hit with a skateboard before a noise that sounds like a gunshot can be heard.

"These guys just started fighting and whaling on each other then this one guy decided to pull out a gun," said a skater, who wished to remain anonymous.

Skaters said they had never seen the people in the video at the park before, and shootings are unheard of.

"I've never seen gunshots go down at the park," skater Gabe Bowman said.

Parents said the skate park is a popular spot for mothers who home-school their children, and Bowman said he normally feels safe while at the park with friends.

"I do feel safe here," Bowman said. "We’re all just here shredding and so all of them are here, so I know I’m safe. But when I hear stuff like gunshots went down earlier, that just does not make me feel good."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Jacksonville Beach Police Department at 904-270-1661. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
