Officers find ‘seriously injured’ 2-year-old after shooting reported

Jacksonville police sergeant at scene on Jernigan Road could not specify how child was hurt

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit are investigating after a 2-year-old was found at a home on Jernigan Road with serious injuries, police said Tuesday night.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said it was called to the home at about 9:15 p.m. in reference to a reported shooting. During a news briefing that occurred hours later, Sgt. Brian Shore said he could not specify how the child was hurt.

Shore said the child was transported to Wolfson Children’s Hospital by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

“The latest report was the child went into surgery and was in critical, but stable condition,” Shore said.

According to Shore, the child was not alone in the home, but he could not say who else was inside. He said it’s unclear if the child lives at the home or was visiting.

Neighbors even seemed unsure about exactly what had happened.

“I just heard some random big bang out of nowhere, and I came outside, and there was ambulances," Christopher Gundersen said.
