JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A former Jacksonville police officer accused of beating a woman who was in handcuffs pleaded no contest on Tuesday to misdemeanor assault charges.

Akinyemi Borisade was accused of hitting a handcuffed Mayra Martinez in June. The Sheriff's Office fired Borisade after cameras captured him repeatedly striking Martinez in the sally port at the jail. Martinez told News4Jax that she suffered a concussion and nerve damage from the beating.

Borisade earlier waived his right to a speedy trial and Tuesday pleaded no contest to the charges.

Adjudication was withheld, and Borisade was ordered to have no contact with Martinez. Because adjudication was withheld, if Borisade keeps himself out of trouble for one year, he will not have a permanent criminal record.

Borisade served one day in jail on the charges.

The State Attorney's Office released a statement about the case:

This sentence is not unusual for a misdemeanor battery case. Despite being repeatedly asked for input about the disposition, Mr. (John) Phillips’ firm declined to provide any input and the case was disposed of in a normal fashion.

John Phillips' firm is representing Martinez.

Video taken in a parking lot in front of Scores, an adult club on University Boulevard at Philips Highway, showed Martinez's violent arrest. According to the police report, officers were called to the bar to escort Martinez from the property because she was drunk and belligerent after quitting work on her first day.

Martinez was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest, and according to the police report had to be struck several times in the back because she was kicking and biting at the officers.

Borisade later shoved Martinez against a wall in the sally port and after she appeared to try to kick at him, he struck her several times while she was still handcuffed.
