Crews battle fast-moving brush fire near homes in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Crews from St. Johns County Fire Rescue and the St. Augustine Fire Department battled a fast-moving brush fire in St. Augustine on Tuesday.

Firefighters were called shortly before 6 p.m. to the North Prairie Lakes Drive neighborhood off County Road 214, just east of Interstate 95.

Fire officials said several homes were initially threatened, but the incident commander reported swift action from the crews prevented damage to any homes, at last check.

Crews continued to work to contain and extinguish the remaining fire, officials said.

Fire Rescue said firefighting efforts are also being supported by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office's Air 2 helicopter, which is circling the area to monitor hot spots.

There were no reported injuries, fire officials said.

Fire officials said initial calls to to emergency dispatch reported that the fire may have started as a small trash fire that escaped containment.

The brush fire was under control around 8 p.m., according to fire officials.

Florida Forest Service personnel were on scene to cut containment lines and assist in the mop up.
