Florida reports 4th highest single-day COVID-19 increase

Several local counties set new single-day records for cases

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Multiple counties in Northeast Florida on Thursday reported single-day records for the number of new coronavirus cases as the statewide surge of continued ahead of Christmas Day.

Among the local counties to report one-day highs Thursday were Putnam, Flagler, Nassau and Clay.

With 13,147 additional cases of the coronavirus reported Thursday, it was the fourth highest single-day increase in Florida.

The Florida Department of Health also announced another 122 people in the state have died with COVID-19. Since the pandemic made it to Florida in March, 21,295 residents and visitors to the state have died of the virus. Three of those deaths were in Northeast Florida, one each in Columbia, Nassau and Putnam counties.

Of people tested for the virus Wednesday, 7.84% tested positive.

Duval County showed another 821 cases, St. Johns had 185 additional cases and Clay County added a record 160 cases. Nine of the 11 Florida counties tracked by News4Jax had positivity rates in double digits.

Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration dashboard shows 5,619 people hospitalized in the state Thursday afternoon. As of 3 p.m., just over 20% of intensive care beds in the state were available.

As of Thursday morning, FDOH reported that 93,077 people in the state have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine since it first reached the state on Dec. 14. Of those, 6,846 were administered in Duval County, 2,011 in St. Johns County and 792 in Clay County.
