DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A Daytona Beach police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed the officer in the face at a gas station Thursday morning, authorities said.
A man identified as Benjamin Joseph Remley, 36, of Deltona, was pronounced dead at a Daytona Beach hospital, according to a police news release. Florida Department of Corrections records show Remley was previously sentenced to three years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was released in February.

Daytona Beach police initially responded to the gas station following reports of a suspicious person, officials said. Remley was issued a trespass warning at the request of the business and left the area. Police received another call about an hour later stating that Remley had returned to the gas station. A responding officer, along with a Volusia County deputy who had been at the station for an unrelated matter, attempted to arrest Remley on a trespassing charge, but Remley began to resist, police said.
Remley pulled a knife from his pocket and slashed the officer along his left upper jaw line, officials said. The officer then pulled his gun from its holster and fired twice, striking Remley under the armpit, authorities said.
The officer, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was expected to make a full recovery, police said. State law enforcement officials are investigating the shooting.
