Florida’s digital driver’s license app no longer an option

Removed from app stores as the state moves to a new vendor

Florida’s digital driver’s license app has vanished from app stores.

Several tech sites were the first to notice.

It was meant to be an easy contact-free way to prove who you are to the police or at stores.

Now, if you head to the app store, it is no longer there.

As of May, the Florida Smart ID app had just over half a million users. There are nearly 18 million licensed drivers in Florida.

The project cost the state $2 million to develop, and it launched near the end of 2021.

It was meant to be an easy and contact-free way to access your state driver’s license, but it did not replace the requirement to have your physical driver’s license when driving a car.

Some users reported that some businesses would not accept the digital license or didn’t even know the app existed.

After removing the app, the state released a statement that said, “The Florida Smart ID applications will be updated and improved by a new vendor. At this time, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is removing the current Florida Smart ID application from the app store.”

The department had reported some issues at the end of June with the app, but it said those problems had been resolved.

Anyone with the app is now encouraged to delete it.

There is no timeline for when a new version will be released. So, as always, make sure you keep your physical driver’s license handy.
