At least 2.4 million Florida families spend more than 30% of income on rent, utilities: report

The Florida Housing Coalition is calling for collaboration among government, private and nonprofit sectors to help solve the current housing crisis, according to a report from News4JAX news partner Jax Today.

The report from the coalition found that at least 2.4 million Florida families are “cost-burdened,” meaning that more than 30% of their income is spent on just rent and utilities.

That doesn’t include costs for transportation, groceries and other basic living expenses, Jax Today reported.

Of those 2.4 million families, 1.3 million are considered low-income households and were reported to be severely cost-burdened.

The FHC also reports a year-to-year increase in people experiencing homelessness since the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that nearly 95,000 children experienced homelessness last year — a 21% increase from 2022.
