FLORIDA – President Donald Trump’s controversial pick to lead the Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth, is facing growing scrutiny over his past and qualifications.
Now, reports from the Wall Street Journal suggest Florida Governor Ron DeSantis may be a top backup choice for the role.

Political experts say if DeSantis heads to Washington, the ripple effects on Florida politics could be significant.
Hegseth Faces Questions About His Role
Hegseth, a former Fox News host, remained confident on Wednesday after relaying to legislators that he has the support of the president-elect despite the questions surrounding misconduct allegations. In a brief exchange, reporters pressed him on his standing with the president:
- Reporter: “Will you be dropping out?”
- Hegseth: “No.”
- Reporter: “Does Trump still have confidence in you?”
- Hegseth: “Yes.”
However, sources close to Trump’s transition team told the Associated Press that contingency plans are being discussed, with DeSantis emerging as a potential replacement.
Florida’s Political Landscape Could Shift
If DeSantis moves to the Pentagon, Florida Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Núñez will step in as governor. According to University of North Florida Political Science Professor Michael Binder, this transition could create a domino effect in Florida’s leadership.
“Lt. Governor Núñez would likely have to address an open Senate seat if Senator Marco Rubio joins the administration as Secretary of State,” Binder explained. “It’s unclear whether Nunez would navigate this from scratch or if political deals, like appointing someone like Lara Trump, would already be in place.”
Beyond that, Núñez would need to appoint a new lieutenant governor and possibly a chief financial officer, as CFO Jimmy Patronis is expected to resign to run for Congress. Binder believes these decisions could provide an opportunity for Nunez to leave a lasting mark on Florida politics.
What it could mean for Florida if DeSantis accepts the role of Secretary of Defense
DeSantis has not publicly commented on the speculation surrounding a potential cabinet role. However, experts say his appointment could reconcile his rocky relationship with Trump while elevating his national profile.
Binder also pointed out potential benefits for Florida if DeSantis were to lead the Department of Defense.
“Having a former governor in that role could mean more resources for Florida’s military bases and infrastructure,” Binder said. “It’s not a guarantee, but it’s likely to benefit the state.”
Additionally, DeSantis’ military background as a JAG officer, while unconventional for a Secretary of Defense, could make him a strong candidate for the position.
The role could also bolster his political resume if he decides to run for president in 2028.
