According to FBI data collected in December from 2020 through last year, Florida has the highest burglary rate this time of year.
A Las Vegas injury law firm analyzed the data and created a map of all 50 states, showing the burglary rates.
Florida leads the nation with more than 88 reported burglaries per 100,000 people. That’s nearly four times the national average of 22.5 per 100,000.
Washington ranks second in the nation at 46.6. Nearly half the number of burglaries in the Sunshine State.
Georgia is below the national average at just 16.68.
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody shared some ways to help protect your home.
- Don’t put Christmas gifts near a window. Even if your tree is near the window -- consider keeping the gifts elsewhere.
- Install a security system or a motion-activated video doorbell.
- Never store a spare key outside your home. If you have one under your door mat -- or a flower pot -- bring it inside.
- And if you plan to leave town for the holidays, use a timer to turn your indoor lights on at night. Your home is less likely to be targeted if it looks like someone is home.
